About The Rights Practice

Since its establishment in 2002, The Rights Practice has been working with local partners in China to promote human rights and law enforcement and help realise the human rights of the poorest and most disadvantaged. We are committed to building the capacity of organisations and providing democratic accountability through enhancing public participation, the role of civil society and rights awareness.

We have a small professional staff based in London and Beijing and a growing network of experts who work with us as consultants or advisors on specific projects. We are supervised by a Board of Directors that meets quarterly in London. The founding Director, Nicola Macbean, former director of the Great Britain-China Centre from 1988 to 1995, has many years of experience working with China.

The Rights Practice is an independent, non-profit organisation registered in England and Wales as a company limited by guarantee (company registration 4365047). Project funding has been received from the European Commission, the UK's Department for International Development (DFID) Civil Society Challenge Fund, the Global Opportunities Fund of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and the Big Lottery Fund.
