On 19 April 2022, The Rights Practice signed a joint statement, with a total of 60 human rights organisations, to express concerns over the approach of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet towards addressing the human rights crisis in China. On 8 March 2022, the UN High Commissioner announced that she had secured a visit to China in May. However, she did not include mention of the expected release of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human rights (OHCHR) report on serious human rights violations in Xinjiang, the Uyghur region.

In the statement we consider the core minimum conditions that must be met for any visit to China by the High Comissioner to be credible including releasing the OHCHR report on serious human rights violations in Xinjiang, the Uyghur region; to meet safely with independent civil society organisations; and to ensure transparency with respect to measures taken to date to ensure access to China is effectively unfettered.
