Executive Director, Nicola Macbean has joined a research team, led by Dr Andreas Fulda from the School of Politics and International Relations at the University of Nottingham, to examine European perspectives on the implementation of China's Overseas NGO Law.

Monitoring the implementation of China's Overseas NGO Law: The view from Europe

China's Overseas NGO Law came into effect on 1 January 2017. Joining Dr Fulda and Nicola Macbean to look at the impact of the law on European China civil society engagement are Dr Patrick Schroeder (Institute of Development Studies) and Dr Horst Fabian (independent researcher and EU-China Civil Society Ambassador).

The research project, funded by the Ford Foundation, will be carried out between 1 October 2017 and 31 December 2018. The two overarching goals of the initiative are to:

  • monitor and evaluate the state of implementation of China's Overseas NGO Law by documenting the intended and unintended consequences of the new law for European not for profit organisations and their Chinese partners
  • reconceptualise people-to-people exchanges in EU-China relations by identifying and documenting new and innovative approaches to critical, creative and constructive European China engagement

A roundtable among European NGOs will take place in Brussels on 5th June 2018. If your organisation would like to attend please complete and return the registration form.
